The crisp autumn air is here, the jack-o'-lanterns are glowing, and the WTS team is thrilled to wish our wonderful community a very Happy Halloween! This season is all about creativity, fun, and making memories with loved ones, and we believe that everyone deserves to partake in the festivities without barriers.

Whether you are heading out for a night of neighborhood trick-or-treating, attending a local community festival, or simply gathering with friends for a spooky celebration, accessibility and safety should always be at the forefront of the fun.

Tips for an Inclusive and Safe Halloween

To help ensure your Halloween is all treats and no tricks, here are a few quick tips for a smooth, accessible experience:

  • Incorporate Your Mobility Device: Halloween is the perfect time to get creative! Wheelchairs, scooters, and walkers can be transformed into incredible focal points for costumes. From pirate ships and race cars to royal thrones and spaceships, the possibilities are endless. Just ensure that any decorations are securely fastened and do not interfere with the wheels, brakes, or joystick controls.

  • Plan Your Route: If you are heading out into the neighborhood, take a few minutes to map out an accessible path. Stick to well-paved sidewalks with curb cuts, and look for homes that offer ground-level or driveway trick-or-treating to avoid steep stairs.

  • Stay Visible: As the sun sets earlier, visibility is crucial. Add reflective tape to costumes and mobility devices, use glow sticks, or attach small LED bike lights to the frame of your wheelchair to ensure drivers and other trick-or-treaters can see you clearly in the dark.

  • Dress for Comfort: October nights can get chilly. Layer your costumes so you can easily adjust to the temperature, and ensure that capes, sashes, or loose fabrics won't get tangled in moving parts.
